Dean H. Snyder, 99, formerly of Streator passed away Saturday, February 11, 2017 at Aperion Care of Bloomington, Illinois.
Visitation will be at 10 AM Monday, February 20 at the Solon-Telford Funeral Home in Streator followed directly by a graveside service at 11AM in the Riverview Cemetery. Full military rites will be accorded by members of the Leslie G. Woods American Legion Post 217 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1492. Family members will serve as pallbearers.
Born May 8, 1917 in Clinton, Illinois, he is the son of John and Lettie (Woolever) Snyder. He married Ladeen Henson on June 2, 1946 at the First United Methodist Church in Streator. She preceded him in death on December 30, 1996.
He is survived by a daughter, Vicky (Alan) Pickens of Normal; a son, Terry (Linda) Snyder of Suwanee, Georgia; grandchildren, Brad (Sheila) Pickens, Jamie (Aaron) Curtis, Erin (Christian) Romeiser and Brent (Allison) Snyder; great grandchildren, Natalie Curtis, Justin Curtis, Taylor Curtis, Sydney Pickens, Lauren Romeiser, Brennan Romeiser, Tucker Romeiser, Mason Dean Snyder and Anna Grace Snyder; and a sister, Genevieve Locke of Bloomington. He is also survived by several nieces and nephew.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a great grandson, Owen Curtis; sisters, Flossie Price, Edna Sanders, Minnie Hartwig, Evelyn Hedrick and Mildred Helmick; and brothers, Floyd, Dale and Bob Snyder.
Born and raised in Clinton, Illinois, he attended Clinton schools and graduated from Clinton High School Class of 1935.He served in the United States Marine Corps from 1943 to 1946. He was in the HQ Company, 1st Battalion, 8th Marines, 2nd Marine Division serving in the Pacific Arena. He was a Purple Heart recipient stemming from the Battle of Tarawa on November 21, 1943. He was a life member of the 2nd Marine Division and a Life Member of the Illinois Chapter 2nd Marine Division. He was a Marine Corps Heritage Foundation Member and a lifetime charter member of the National WW II Memorial. On September 13, 2011 he was honored by his country by taking the Land of Lincoln Honor Flight along with his son, Terry.
He was a member of the Leslie G. Woods American Legion Post 217 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1492. He also served on the Honor Guard Squad for fallen brothers and sisters. He received the American Legion Medal of Merit. He was a member of the Streator BPOE 591 for 63 years. He served as the Treasurer for the Streator Elks and the Eastern Illinois District of the Elks as well as serving as the Auditor and Accounting and State Chairman of the Illinois Elks. He also served on the Streator Appeals and Zoning Board for 25 years.
Dean and his wife owned and operated Snyder’s Gift Shop in Streator from 1954 to 1988. Prior to that, Dean worked in Streator and Ottawa for the A & P Grocery store and later Baldwin’s Grocery. Dean was a life-long Cub fan and belonged to the Die-Hard Cubs’ Fan Club.
