Frank M. Butzen, 89, of rural Streator passed away Friday, March 10, 2017 at O.S.F. St. Joseph Medical Center in Bloomington.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 A.M. Tuesday at St. Michael the Archangel Church, Streator. Rev. Fr. Raymond Guthrie will officiate. Rev. Fr. David Hulshof will concelebrate.
Visitation will be from 5-8 P.M. Monday at the Solon-Telford Funeral Home, Streator. The rosary will be recited at 7:00 PM
Burial will be in St. Anthony Cemetery, Streator. Pallbearers will be grandchildren, Nathan Butzen, James Schall, Matthew Simmons, Aaron Butzen, Michael Simmons, and Justin Butzen. Full military rites will be accorded by members of the Leslie G. Woods American Legion Post 217 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1492.
Born July 30, 1927 in Edinburg, Texas he was the son of William and Cecilia (Hilbrunner) Butzen. He married Dorothy Krapf on April 17, 1951 in Poplar Bluff, Missouri. She preceded him in death on April 2, 2004.
He is survived by daughters, Mary Katherine “Kay” (Don) Simmons of Kannapolis, North Carolina and Barbara Butzen of River Forest; sons, Daniel Butzen of Hampton IL and Stephen (Susan) Butzen of Ankeny, Iowa; 11 grandchildren, James Schall, Matthew and Michael Simmons, Christina Langston, Judith, Justin, Nathan, Aaron and Camille Butzen, Megan and Benjamin Brotherson, 10 great grandchildren and a brother, William (Margaret) Butzen of Ottawa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a granddaughter Rebekah; sisters, Mary Louise Butzen, Theresa Lampe and Frances Rubenacker; and one brother, Bernard Butzen.
Frank attended grade school in Missouri and graduated from Poplar Bluff High School.
He was Sergeant in the United States Army and served with the 485th heavy engineers in France and Germany during WWII.
He retired from GE Plastics where he was a mechanic. He also was a farmer and farmed east of Streator.
He was a member of the former St. Anthony Church and currently belonged to St. Michael the Archangel Parish. He served as an adult Altar Server through the years. He also held memberships with the Msgr. George A. Dzuryo Knights of Columbus Council # 790, Illinois Citizens for Life, National Right to Life, Pro-Life Action League, Leslie G. Woods American Legion Post 217 and the GE Retiree Club.
Memorials may be made to Catholic Relief Services, Catholic Extension Society, Pro-Life Action League or to the donor’s choice.
