Richard Schaibley Obituary

Richard “Dick” Schaibley, 88, of Streator went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 4, 2017 at O.S.F. St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Ottawa after a six month battle with Mesothelioma cancer. He was surrounded by his loving family.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:00 P.M. Saturday at St. Michael the Archangel Church, Streator. Msgr. Philip Halfacre will officiate.

Visitation will be from 9:30 A.M. until the time of service Saturday at St. Michael the Archangel Church, Streator.

Burial will be in St. Anthony Cemetery, Streator. Pallbearers will be his grandsons. 3rd Degree members of the Msgr. George Dzuryo Knights of Columbus Council #790 will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Born September 13, 1928 in Streator he was the son of Carl and Agnes (Thone) Schaibley. He married RoseMary Durdan on September 9, 1950 at the former St. Stephen's Church, Streator.

He is survived by his wife, RoseMary Schaibley of Streator; daughters, Patricia (Ken) Spain of Channahon, Kathy (Wally) Andersen of Streator and Beth (Albert) Retoff of Streator; sons, James (Cindy) Schaibley of Streator and Edward (Lisa) Schaibley of Bloomington; grandchildren, Theresa (Brian) Crocker of West Chicago, Andrew Spain of Lockport, Samuel Spain of Des Plaines, Kenneth (Ryan) Spain of Plainfield, Sarah (Kirk Pillar) Spain of Montgomery, Katie Spain of Channahon, William Spain of Bemidji, North Dakota, John (Dawn) Spain of O’Fallon, Jeff Andersen of Minooka, Jenny (Brian) Adkins of Streator, Jill (John) Rosner of Plainfield, Brittany Retoff of Hermitage, Tennessee, Matthew Retoff of Streator, Brett (Megan) Schaibley of Frankfort, Dustin (Heather) Schaibley of Streator, Adam (Elizabeth McNally) Schaibley of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, Kendall (Travis) Kobler of Knoxville, Tennessee, Kyle (Linda) Schaibley of Colorado Springs, Colorado and Connor (Tara) Schaibley of Morristown, Tennessee; 19 great grandchildren; 7 step great grandchildren; sisters, Dorothy (Robert) Crocker of Martinsville, Indiana and Sandra (Michael) Novak of Streator; a brother, Charles Schaibley of Riverview, Florida; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews also survive.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister in law, Janice Schaibley.

Born and raised in Streator, Dick attended St. Anthony Grade School, the same school his mother and five generations of Schaibleys would end up attending. He also attended Streator High School.

He was a 71 year member of the Sheet Metal Workers Local #1. During his 45 year active career he worked for Winkler Heating and Sheet Metal, Wilkinson Plumbing and Heating, Kaschke Sheet Metal and retired from Ottawa Heating and Ventilating. While working in the Sheet Metal trade he made and helped install the cross on the steeple of the former St. Stephen’s Church. He also did steeple work on various other churches including his beloved home Church of St. Anthony.

Dick was a life member of the former St. Anthony Church and currently belonged to St. Michael the Archangel Church, Streator. He was also a 3rd Degree member of Msgr. George A. Dzuryo Knights of Columbus Council #790. He was an avid golfer and belonged to the K of C Golf League as well as the K of C Bowling League through the years. He enjoyed his annual gardening. He took great pride in putting up his outdoor Christmas decorations each year, especially the manger scene and was awarded first prize from the city for his efforts. He was instrumental in the development of Streator Youth Baseball and was very active at Southside in the early years. He was an avid White Sox fan. Dick was very skilled and could build or fix about anything. He used these abilities to design and build his own home where he raised his family. After his retirement Dick and RoseMary traveled to many destinations in the U.S. and Canada.

He was a longtime faithful member of St. Anthony Church and School. He put in countless hours of work around the school, church, rectory and convent during the course of his life.

Along with his faith, his family meant everything to him. His example and the high standards he set of serving others, worship of his Lord and Savior, honesty, hard work and being a true gentleman, are legacies that will be remembered and carried on with him in mind. His family looks forward to the day when they are once again reunited.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Michael’s School or the charity of the donor’s choice.
