Eleanor E. Howell M.D. was welcomed home to the glory of Emmanuel’s Land on Sunday, March 3, 2024.
A Service of Praise and Remembrance will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 16 at the First United Methodist Church, Streator.
A visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at the church.
Dr. Howell was born on January 21, 1925 in Youngstown, OH. She was the daughter of Albert and Mary Allison (Douglass) Howell.
She is survived by a nephew, Bruce (Mary) Howell; a niece, Allison Howell (Serafino) Barone; great nieces, Katherine (Howell) (Ben) Fabian and Aurora (Dr. Eitan Sosner) Barone; a great nephew, Patrick (Marie) Howell; great-great nephews, Hunter Douglass Fabian and Russell Charles Fabian; great-great nieces, Emma Rose Howell and Erin Kate Howell; cousins, William (Ellen) Douglass, Toby (Douglass) Gorant, and Arlene Douglass-Pelley; along with good friends Betty Brassfield, Betty DiGusto, John and Kathy Drapa; and the Davis family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Clinton E. Howell; a sister, Wilma (Howell) Wiley; a cousin, John Douglas and very good friends and guiding role models, Marjorie J. Davis, Octavia Heistad Hembach and Bruce and Janice Hart.
Dr. Howell graduated from Columbiana High School in 1943. She was a 1947 graduate of St. Elizabeth Hospital School of Nursing, Moody Bible Institute in 1950 and Northwestern University in 1960. In 1964 she graduated from the Medical College of Pennsylvania (Drexel University) after serving as president her senior year and president of the Christian Medical Society.
She served an internship at Cook County Hospital in Chicago from 1964-1965 and was awarded the Intern of the Year award. She continued at Cook County Hospital with her residency from 1965-1968, being named chief resident in July 1968.
She was an instructor at the University of Illinois College of Medicine from 1968-1974.
Dr. Howell practiced internal medicine in Streator from 1969-1988 and was affiliated with St. Mary’s Hospital, serving as the Medical Staff President for two terms. Upon her retirement, she was a volunteer physician at the Indian Health Service Hospital in Eagle Butte, SD, for several years.
She was president of the LaSalle County Medical Society, receiving its Lifetime Achievement Award, and was delegate to the Illinois State Medical Society.
She was a long-time active member of the First United Methodist Church, Streator, and served on numerous committees.
She also volunteered on the Salvation Army Board, VNA Board, YMCA Board, YMCA Endowment Board, and was a campaign chair for the United Way.
She was an avid tennis fan, played in several senior tennis tournaments and attended all of the Grand Slams of professional tennis.
