Frances Corrigan Obituary

Frances G. “Fran” Corrigan, 94, of Streator passed away Thursday, March 28, 2024 at O.S.F. St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, April 2, 2024 at St. Michael the Archangel Parish Church, Streator.  Fr. Ignacio Cardenas will officiate.

Visitation will be from 4:00 P.M. until 6:00 P.M. Monday at the Solon-Telford Funeral Home, Streator.

Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Streator.

Born August 23, 1929 in Streator, she was the daughter of Frank and Paula (Trainor) Corrigan.

She is survived by a sister, Janice Meyers of Evanston; a sister-in-law, Eleanor Corrigan of Streator; 10 nieces and nephews and many great and great-great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Paula (Raymond) Cassady; brothers John (Anne) Corrigan, Lawrence Corrigan; nephews, Patrick and Timothy Cassady and John Meyers.

Born and raised in Streator, she attended Willow Grove and St. Mary’s Grade Schools and graduated from Streator High School, class of 1947. She continued her education at St. Francis College and graduated in 1951 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Liberal Arts.  She concluded her education by earning her Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Illinois.

Over the years, Fran taught in Streator, in the Chicago suburbs and Syracuse, New York. She taught at Willow Springs, Schiller Park, Woodland, Western Irving and Greely Grade Schools.  She retired from Centennial Grade School in Streator in 1994 after teaching there for 25 years.

Fran was very active in her community.  She enjoyed visiting the needy, was a Eucharistic Minister and helped serve funeral luncheons at the Knights of Columbus for many years.  She was a member of The Legion of Mary, the Knights of Columbus Women’s Auxiliary, the Alter and Rosary Society for St. Mary’s Church and St. Michael’s the Archangel Church, St. Vincent DePaul Society and the Retired Teacher’s Association.

After her retirement, Fran began volunteering at the Dwight Correctional Facility.  She would attend Mass and lead faith formation with the women who were incarcerated.  This work was important to her as  she wanted to bring Jesus to those who needed a message of hope and assurance of love and someone to believe in.  She became friends and stayed in contact with many of the women after they were released or moved to another facility.

Fran also enjoyed volunteering at St. Mary’s Hospital and playing Bridge with her friends.  Her family was very important to her. She would spend as much time as she could with them and getting to know each of her nieces and nephews.  She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

Memorials may be directed to St. Vincent DePaul Society.
