John R. "Dick" Chalkey

John R. “Dick” Chalkey, 79, of Streator passed away Sunday, August 11, 2019 at his residence in Streator.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:30 A.M. Friday at the St. Michael the Archangel Church, Streator. Rev. Fr. Simon Taabu will officiate.

Visitation will be from 4-7 P.M. Thursday at the Solon-Telford Funeral Home, Streator. The rosary will be recited at 6:45 P.M.

Cremation rites will be accorded following the services. Full military rites will be accorded by members of the Leslie G. Woods American Legion Post 217 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1492 following the services at the church.

Born February 7, 1940 in Streator he was the son of Albert and Beatrice (Crawford) Chalkey. He married Cindy Augustine on August 11, 1972 in Streator.

He is survived by his wife Cindy Chalkey of Streator; sons, Kevin (Kathy) Chalkey of Streator and Chad (Stephanie) Chalkey of Bulverde, Texas; grandchildren, Braiden, Cole, Kiefer, Luca and Sienna Chalkey; brothers, William “Mick” Chalkey of Streator and Thomas Chalkey of Streator; sisters, Margaret Yanak of Overland Park, Kansas and Nancy (Dick) Battershell of Streator; several nieces and nephews also survive.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Katherine Baumgardner and brothers, Terry and Robert Chalkey.

Born and raised in Streator he attended St. Stephen’s Grade School and graduated from Streator High School. He later attended Illinois Valley Community College.

He served in 101st Airborne in the United States Army during the Viet Nam era.

He worked through the years for Owens Illinois Glass Company and later for Caterpillar from where he retired.

He was a member of the Leslie G. Woods American Legion Post 217 and was an avid pool player and golfer. He was active through the years with Streator Youth Baseball as a coach and board member.

Memorials may be directed to the charity of the donor’s choice.
