John N. Groesbeck, 83 of Streator passed away Saturday morning (August 3, 2019) at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center, Bloomington
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday at St. Francis of Assisi Church, Ottawa with Father David Kipfer, officiating.
Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 PM Wednesday at Solon-Telford Funeral Home, Streator with the rosary recited at 6:45 PM.
Burial with full military rites conducted by member of American Legion Post # 217 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post # 1492 will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Streator.
Mr. Groesbeck was born on Mother’s Day, May 14, 1936 in Ottawa, the son of John and Pluma (McClosky) Groesbeck Sr.
He married Judith Benner August 19, 1961 at Immaculate Conception Church, Streator. She survives.
John had been employed as a pipefitter. He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Church, Ottawa. He attended St. Francis Grade School and was a graduate of Marquette High School in the class of 1955. He served in the Army Reserves.
John coached little league baseball, was past president of Streator Youth Football and did write-ups for Streator Youth Football. He was a member of American Legion Post # 217, Sons and Friends of Erin, 4th degree Knights of Columbus, past district secretary for the Lions Club also a member of the Elks, AmVets, NRA. John was an avid bowler, fisherman golfer and master story teller.
He is survived by his wife, Judy, two daughters, Lori (Tim) Kelley, Mendota, Cathy (Mark) Platt, Ottawa, three sons, John “Nick” (Lisa) Groesbeck, Streator, Louis “Scott” (Maria) Groesbeck, Weatherford Texas, and Jeff (Dawn) Groesbeck, Streator, eleven grandchildren, Dylan, Justin, Cameron, Nora, Curtis, Jared and Shaelyn Groesbeck, Miranda (Drake) Roberts, Jacob Kelley, Lila and Evie Platt, three great grandchildren, Chrissy, Kendall and Dawson Groesbeck. two sisters, Mary (Steve) Ladd, Colorado, Ann Scardello, Colorado, two brothers, David (Betty) Groesbeck, Colorado and Gerald (Nancy) Groesbeck, Florida.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Pallbearers will be grandsons, Dylan, Justin, Cameron, Curtis and Jared Groesbeck and Jacob Kelley.
Memorials may be made to the Streatorland Community Food Pantry or the family.
