Mary Sweeden Obituary

Mary L. Sweeden, 101, of Streator passed away Tuesday, June 11, 2019 at Heritage Health Therapy and Senior Care.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:30 A.M. Monday at St. Michael the Archangel Church, Streator. Rev. Fr. Simon Taabu will officiate.

Visitation will be from 9-11 A.M. Monday at the Solon-Telford Funeral Home, Streator.

Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Streator. Pallbearers will be grandchildren, Jeremy Hicks, Chad Sweeden, Travis “Bo” Sweeden, Tim Siscoe, Jeff Horner, Cahill Horner, Blake Sweeden and Tyler Hellman. Honorary pallbearers will be Zack Siscoe and Caden Horner.

Born January 16, 1918 in Emmington, Illinois she was the daughter of Edward and Kathryn (Conroy) Cahill. She married Gerald M. Sweeden on July 27, 1944 at St. Bernard’s Church in Sunbury. He preceded her in death on June 22, 2010.

She is survived by a daughter Linda (Edwin deceased) Hicks of Morton; sons, Paul (Deborah) Sweeden of Ottawa, Allen (Lori) Sweeden of Streator, David (Laural) Sweeden of Streator and Richard (Carol) Sweeden of Streator; 11 grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren; and a sister, Ellen Slattery of Morris.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and brothers, Edward and Melford Cahill.

She attended Sunbury Grade School and graduated from Dwight High School. She lived in the Emmington, Blackstone and rural Streator areas her lifetime.

She worked through the years for Owens Illinois Glass Company, Seneca Shipyards, GTE Telephone and Kennedy Manufacturing. She also assisted her husband Gerald on the family farm for many years.

She was a member of the former Immaculate Conception Church and currently belonged to St. Michael the Archangel Church, Streator.

Mary and Gerald were very accomplished in Ball Room dancing and traveled over the state dancing with the Cosmo Dance Club.

Memorials may be directed to St. Vincent DePaul Society or the charity of the donor’s choice.
