Robert D. “Smitty” Smith, 84, of Ransom passed away Thursday, October 18, 2018 at Flanagan Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Flanagan, Illinois.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M. Monday at the Solon-Telford Funeral Home, Streator. Rev. William Callister will officiate.
Visitation will be from 2-5 P.M. Sunday at the Solon-Telford Funeral Home, Streator.
Burial will be in Allen Township Cemetery, Ransom. Family members will serve as pallbearers.
Born February 19, 1934 in Ransom he was the son of Walter and Clara (Knudson) Smith. He married Victoria Gulvas on January 20, 1961. She survives in Flanagan.
He is also survived by a daughter, Sharon (Charles) Jaegle of Lincoln; sons, Robert (Kimberley) Smith of Ancona and David (Jennifer) Smith of Streator; 12 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews also survive.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and sisters, Dolores Smith and Eleanor Kennedy.
Born and raised in the Ransom area he attended a one room country grade school near Ransom. He later graduated from Streator Township High School in the class of 1952.
He served in the United States Army.
He farmed his lifetime on the family farm in rural Ransom. He also worked through the years as a truck driver for Cahill Trucking and Luckey Trucking.
He was a member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Streator.
Bob-o as he was referred at his second home, Flanagan Rehabilitation, was a fun loving family man who will be dearly missed by his loving family and friends.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or the Flanagan Nursing and Rehabilitation Center activity fund.
