Obituary

  Alvin R. DeLong, 87, of Streator passed away Saturday, August 12, 2023 at Flanagan Rehabilitation in Flanagan, Illinois.

  Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, August 16th at the Solon-Telford Funeral Home, Streator.

  Visitation will be from 10:00 A.M. until 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, August 16th at the funeral home.

  Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Streator.  Members of the Leslie G. Woods American Legion Post 217 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1492 will conduct a flag folding ceremony at the cemetery.

  Born June 5, 1936 in Pontiac he was the son of Alvin and Olive (Biamont) DeLong.  He married Judith A. Holt on July 17, 1961.

  He is survived by his wife, Judith A. DeLong of Streator; sons, Todd DeLong of Streator and Matt (Kristin) DeLong of Pontiac; a daughter in law, Stephanie DeLong of Mt. Juliet, Tennessee; grandchildren, Tessa (Sam) Mackinson of Pontiac, Stephanie DeLong, Jr. of Mt. Juliet, Tennessee, Kalee (Jamie) Adams of Mt. Juliet, Tennessee, Kyle DeLong of Pontiac, Keegan DeLong of Mt. Juliet, Tennessee and Alvin DeLong of Pontiac; 4 great grandchildren also survive.

  He was preceded in death by his parents; sons, Eric DeLong and Kevin DeLong; and sisters, Leona, Elizabeth and Patricia.

  He attended St. Anthony Grade School and graduated from Streator High School in the class of 1955.

  He served in the United States Navy from 1955-1959.

  He worked through the years as a truck driver for EB Cullen.  He later worked for Borg Warner (GE Plastics) from where he retired after 31 years.

  Alvin was a star athlete in high school and was named Athlete of the Year in 1955.  He lettered in Football, Wrestling and Track while in school.  He was a 2-time state qualifier in Wrestling.  He boxed while in the service and when he returned to Streator he boxed in the Golden Gloves.  He won 2 Golden Glove titles in the early 1960’s.  He also enjoyed running through the years and ran in several marathons (including the Chicago Marathon), 5 and 10 K races.

  He was an accomplished woodworker who built many different items including furniture.  He loved sports of all kinds and was a big Chicago sports fan.

  Memorials may be directed to the charity of the donor’s choice.
