Calvin J. Flavel

Calvin J. Flavel, 86, of Streator passed away Friday, April 27, 2018 at Heritage Health Therapy and Senior Care, Streator.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:30 A.M. Tuesday at St. Michael the Archangel Church, Streator. Msgr. Philip Halfacre will officiate.

Visitation will be from 4-8 P.M. Monday at the Solon-Telford Funeral Home, Streator. Additional visitation will be from 10:00 A.M. until 11:00 A.M. Tuesday at the Solon-Telford Funeral Home, Streator. The rosary will be recited Tuesday morning at 9:30 A.M. at the funeral home.

Burial will be in St. Stephens Cemetery, Streator. Pallbearers will be grandchildren, Jeremy Flahaven, Adam Manypenny, Andrew “Ryan” Manypenny and Jalen Flavel; Patrick Stephens, Joe Behlke, Bill Scarratt and Mike Kerestes. Honorary pallbearers will be, Jim Lebo, Don Kerestes, Ray Creamean, Doug Doermann and Dick Sabol. 3rd Degree members of the Msgr. George A. Dzuryo Knights of Columbus Council # 790 will also serve as honorary pallbearers. Full military rites will be accorded by members of the Leslie G. Woods American Legion Post 217 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1492.

Born January 23, 1932 in Waukesha, Wisconsin he was the son of Calvin and Laura (Italiano) Flavel Sr. He married Patricia J. Lebo on November 22, 1951 in Pensacola, Florida.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia Flavel of Streator; daughters, Pamela (Joseph) Furlan of Peru; Catherine Flahaven of Streator, Debra (Harry) Manypenny of Streator; a son, Daniel (Tricia) Flavel of Ottawa; grandchildren, Jeremy (Heidi) Flahaven, Kelli (Patrick) Stephens, Adam Manypenny, Andrew “Ryan” Manypenny, Ashley Manypenny, Alexis Manypenny, Aurora Flavel and Jalen Flavel; great grandchildren, Rowan and Arlo Flahaven.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a son in law, Patrick Flahaven.

He served in the United States Navy from 1951-1955.

He graduated from Streator Township High School in 1949 and LaSalle-Peru-Oglesby Junior College in 1957. He graduated from Illinois State University in 1959.

He worked at Anthony Company from 1950-1951 and part time from 1955-1956. He later worked for Northern Illinois Gas Company from 1959-1964. He was a foreman on the grass mowing crew for the LaSalle County Maintenance Department for 22 years from 1964-1983.

He was a teacher at Marquette High School from 1964-1998 and served as a substitute teacher for 16 years after that for a total of 50 years at Marquette. While at Marquette Cal was a very active volunteer. He served as the head scorekeeper for 29 years. He was inducted into the Marquette High School Hall of Fame and the Illinois High School Hall of Fame. He was a faculty representative to the Marquette High School Parish Council as well as the St. Stephen’s Parish Council.

He was a member of the former St. Stephen’s Church and currently belonged to St. Michael the Archangel Church where he served as a Eucharistic Minister. He was also a member of the Msgr. George A. Dzuryo Knights of Columbus Council # 790 and a former member of the United Commercial Travelers, Streator Kiwanis Club and the Lions Club.

Calvin was very devoted to his family, faith, and the Marquette Community. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinal Baseball fan. In his free time he enjoyed playing cards, fishing and working cross-word puzzles.

Memorials may be directed to Marquette Academy, St. Michael the Archangel Church or the charity of the donor’s choice.
