Calvin C. Sloan, 98, of Streator passed away Sunday, April 27, 2025 at the Illinois Veteran’s Home in LaSalle.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 P.M. Friday, May 2nd at the Solon-Telford Funeral Home, Streator.
Visitation will be from 1-2 P.M. Friday, May 2nd at the Solon-Telford Funeral Home, Streator.
Burial will be in St. Stephen’s Cemetery, Streator. Full military rites will be accorded by members of the Leslie G. Woods American Legion Post 217 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1492.
Born November 24, 1926 in Long Point he was the son of Charles and Vivian (Fisher) Sloan. He married Josephine A. Bednar on April 21, 1945 at St. Stephen’s Church, Streator. She preceded him in death on May 3, 2016.
He is survived by daughters, Jane Wagner of Streator and Judy (Lee) Vanderschaaf of Clinton, Mississippi; grandchildren, Brian (Neva) Vanderschaaf of Republic, Missouri and Curtis Vanderschaaf of Raymond, Mississippi; great grandchildren, Nicholas Vanderschaaf and step great grandchildren, Kevin and Jessica Ford.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Gloria Mueller; a son, Mark Sloan; and siblings, Neva, Paul, Fay, Frances, Vivian, Alice, Charles, Donald and Dale.
Born and raised in Long Point he attended Long Point Grade School and graduated from Long Point High School.
Calvin was a World War II veteran having served in the United States Army. During his time in the service, he was stationed in Germany.
He worked through the years for Thatcher’s Glass Manufacturing and later Owens Illinois Glass from where he retired. He was an avid golfer.
He was a member of the former St. Stephens Church and currently belonged to St. Michael the Archangel Church. He was also a member of the Leslie G. Woods American Legion Post 217.
Calvin was a quiet gentleman with twinkling blue eyes. He was a farm boy at heart. He was of the generation that saw what needed to be done and did it. Above all he spent his whole life taking care of his family and he was beloved for it. We will so miss his gentle nature. Our dad, grandpa and great grandpa.
Memorials may be directed St. Michael the Archangel Church.
