Donald L. Phelps

  Donald Larry Phelps, 77, of Streator passed away Monday, August 21, 2023 at Ottawa Pavilion in Ottawa, Illinois.

  Private graveside services will be held.  Full military honors will be accorded by members of the Leslie G. Woods American Legion Post 217 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1492.

  The Solon-Telford Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

  Born October 12, 1945 in Vandalia he was the son of Donald and Helen (Willis) Phelps.  He married Sarah Blakemore on November 26, 1967 at the First United Methodist Church in Streator.

  He is survived by his wife, Sarah Phelps of Streator; a daughter, Karen (Devon) Weldy of Wakarusa, Indiana; a daughter in law, Sherry Phelps of Streator; 5 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; sisters, Joyce Taylor of Vandalia and Sandy Phelps of Vandalia; a brother, Robert Phelps of Vandalia; and a sister in law, Brenda Phelps.

  He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Thomas Phelps; and a brother, James Phelps.

  Larry graduated from Tonica High School in the class of 1963. 

  He served in the United States Army in Vietnam.

  When he returned from the Army he worked for a while for Streator Drain Tile.  He later worked for Commonwealth Edison as Mobile Mechanic until his retirement.

  Larry was a talented woodworker which was a hobby he truly enjoyed.  He built many clocks as well as furniture through the years.

  He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
