Doris Hirkala Obituary

Doris Hirkala, 91, of Streator passed away Tuesday, November 9, 2021 at Heritage Health Therapy and Senior Care, Streator.
Funeral services will be at 3:00 P.M. Friday at the Solon-Telford Funeral Home, Streator. Deacon Robb Caputo will officiate.
Visitation will be from 1:30 P.M. until 3:00 P.M. Friday at the Solon-Telford Funeral Home, Streator.
Burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Streator. Pallbearers will be grandsons, Josh and Seth Besowshek; Joe Hirkala; great grandson, Clayton Enlgert; grand-sons in law, Josh Farrell and Michael Jennings. Honorary pallbearers will be a grandson son in law, Daniel Wiley and son in laws, Bill Englert; David Jackson and Randy Lene.
Born June 20, 1930 in Streator, she was the daughter of Roy and Jennie (Swain) Sornberger. She married Joseph D. Hirkala on August 28, 1948 at St. Stephen’s Church, Streator. He preceded her in death on February 9, 2021.
She is survived by daughters, Carol (Bill) Englert of Streator, Cyndi (Randy) Lene of LaPlata, Missouri and Sandy (David) Jackson of Hanceville, Alabama; a daughter in law, Ada Hirkala of Streator; grandchildren, Marie (Josh) Farrell of Streator, Alanna Jo Englert of Ottawa, Ashley (Brent Anderson) Hirkala of Streator, Joe Hirkala of Varna, Josh (Dawn Jackson) Besowshek of LaPlata, Missouri, Seth (Jen) Besowshek of Lake St. Louis, Missouri, Abbie (Michael) Jennings of LaPlata, Missouri, Desiree (Daniel) Wiley of Cullman, Alabama and Shannon (Brett) McDonald of Hanceville, Alabama; 21 great grandchildren; 1 great-great granddaughter; a brother in law, George Hirkala; sister in laws, Gundy Sornberger and Ann Reed; her three lifelong friends, Pat Van Hyning, Mary Biros and Gen Majernik; many nieces and nephews also survive.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Jim Hirkala; grandchildren, Kirk Englert, Luke Englert, Miranda Englert and Crisandra Englert in infancy; a brother, Arthur Sornberger; and a sister in law, Dorothy Hirkala.
Born and raised in Streator, she attended Greeley Grade School and Streator High School.
She worked for Owens Illinois for many years in various positions until her retirement. She later worked for McDonalds Restaurant and delivered newspapers on a rural paper route.
She was a member of the former St. Stephen’s Church and currently belonged to St. Michael the Archangel Church. She was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary at the Moose Lodge and the V.F.W.
Doris loved Canning, Sewing and Baking. She was famous for her Rozek rolls and her pies. She was the best fisherman and card player around and enjoyed many card games with friends through the years. She also enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and doing puzzles with them.
Doris and Joe, as well as family and friends enjoyed many years of fishing, swimming and making memories at their cabin along the Vermillion River.
She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and will be greatly missed by her family.
