Ernest Rittenhouse

Ernest “Ernie” Rittenhouse, 94, of Long Point passed away Thursday, June 7, 2018 at his residence in rural Long Point.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday at Solon-Telford Funeral Home, Streator with his son-in-law Rev. Mark Matthews, officiating.

Visitation will be from 4-7 P.M. Monday at Solon-Telford Funeral Home.

Burial will be in Long Point Cemetery, Long Point. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Full military honors will be accorded by members of the Leslie G. Woods American Legion Post 217 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1492.

Mr. Rittenhouse was born October 12, 1923 in Long Point. He was the son of Paul and Alta (Call) Rittenhouse. He married Emily Timmerman Jan. 28, 1947 in Minonk. She preceded him in death Oct. 2, 2014.

He is survived by three daughters, Sharon (Dr. Michael) Bukstein, Hannibal MO, Sheila (Charles) Melecosky, Westville and Becky (Rev. Mark) Matthews, Hanover Park, six grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.

Ernie was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a sister, Doris Ryan and brothers, Glen and Paul Rittenhouse.

He attended Long Point grade school and graduated from Long Point High School. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois.

He served in the United States Army during WW II.

He began his career at his father’s implement business in Long Point. He later moved to Petersburg and owned and operated his own implement business with his brother Glen. Ernie and his wife later owned and operated Rittenhouse Warranty Claim Service until their retirement.

He was a member of the Long Point Christian Church in Long Point and the Long Point American Legion Post.

Ernie was well revered in his community as a true friend and mentor. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends.
