Born May 8, 1935 in Streator, she was the daughter of Thomas Harcar and Anna (Lesak) Harcar. It was in Streator she met, fell in love and married Kentucky charmer Oral T. Higdon on September 20, 1955.
She is survived by her husband Oral T. Higdon of Streator; daughters, Aggie (Pat) Hatzer of Streator, Veronica Higdon of Ottawa, Mary (Kirk) Drapp of Naperville and Laurie (Dave) Pearson of Bloomington; a son, Paul Higdon of Streator; grandchildren, Michelle (Ry) Whittington, Meghan (Chris) Krzan, Abby, Emmy and Jackson Pearson; Riley and Ali Drapp; great grandchildren, Emmett, Atticus and Oliver Whittington; Cole and Callie Krzan; a sister, Mary Ann Woodward of Bloomington; a brother, James Harcar of Streator; several nieces and nephews also survive.
She was preceded in death by her parents Thomas Harcar and Anna (Lesak) Harcar; a son, Oral Higdon Jr.; a grandson, Tanner Shepard; sisters, Ann Beckom and Agnes Hornick; brothers, Thomas Jr., Joseph, Michael, William and Andrew Harcar; and sister in laws: Rose Harcar, Maria Harcar and Ann Harcar.
Born and raised in Streator, she attended St. Stephen’s School and graduated from Streator High School in the class of 1953.
Before starting her family, she worked for Thatcher’s Glass Company and Owens Illinois Glass. Later she held the role of bookkeeper for Harcar Brothers Construction for many years.
Above all, Frances loved God. She was a member of the former St. Stephen’s Church and supported the Altar and Rosary Society of the church where she served as President and worked tirelessly supporting the church through bake sale fundraisers, rummage sales and hosting the annual Priest luncheon. Currently she belonged to St. Michael the Archangel Church. It wasn’t uncommon to see Frances wearing an apron covered in flour with a baking pin in her hand rolling out her beloved rozek. Baking was a passion rooted in her Slovak heritage and will forever be her legacy.
Memorials may be directed to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
