George T. Hirkala, 93, of Streator passed away Sunday, May 12, 2024 at the ARC of Streator.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:30 A.M. Friday, May 17th at St. Michael the Archangel Church, Streator.
Visitation will be from 9:00 A.M. until 11:00 A.M. Friday, May 17th at the Solon-Telford Funeral Home, Streator.
Burial will be in Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Leonore. Full military rites will be accorded by members of the Leslie G. Woods American Legion Post 217 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1492.
Born May 25, 1930 in Streator he was the son of John and Suzanna (Yuskov) Hirkala. He married Dorothy Salz on May 4, 1963. She preceded him in death on October 18, 2021.
He is survived by a daughter, Diana Hirkala of Streator; sons, David (Jeanne) Hirkala of Streator and Daniel Hirkala of Streator; grandchildren, Thomas Hirkala of Ladd, Marcus (Meaghan) Hirkala of Ladd and Ann (Cam) Meyers of Streator.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a sister, Ann Reed; and brothers, John and Joseph Hirkala.
He attended St. Stephen’s Grade School. He also served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was stationed in Germany.
He worked for Owens Illinois Glass Company in the Shipping Department for nearly 40 years until his retirement.
He was a member of the former St. Stephen’s Church and currently belonged to St. Michael the Archangel Church. He was also a member of the Leslie G. Woods American Legion Post 217.
