Godelieve A. Harmsen, 100, of Streator passed away Friday, March 3, 2023 at Heritage Health Therapy and Senior Care in Streator.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, March 8th at St. Michael the Archangel Church, Streator.
Visitation will be from 9:00 A.M. until 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, March 8th at the Solon-Telford Funeral Home, Streator.
Burial will be in St. Anthony Cemetery, Streator.
Born November 1, 1922 in Saskatchewan, Canada she was the daughter of Alois and Marguerite (Bogaert) Sabbe. She married John H. Harmsen on January 8, 1944 in Canada. John, who was from Streator, and Godelieve met in Northern Canada while he was Stationed on the DEW-Line (Defense Early Warning) Radar System when he was in the Army Air Corps (Air Force). He preceded her in death on December 2, 1994.
She is survived by sisters, Elise Franklin of Vancouver, British Columbia and Germaine Fraser of Surrey, British Columbia; many nieces and nephews also survive.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and sisters, Alma Moule, Elza Brauner and Marie Matthews.
She was raised in Pas, Manitoba and attended Sacred Heart Grade School and The Pas Collegiate High School. She came to America in 1946.
She worked for the Royal Bank of Canada and Montgomery Wards in the credit department. She later worked as a manager for Spiegel’s Mail Order from where she retired.
She was a member of the former St. Anthony Church and currently belongs to St. Michael the Archangel Church. She was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society of her church, the St. Mary’s Hospital Auxiliary and the Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to St. Michael the Archangel School.
