Kurt R. Schmitz, 58, of Streator passed away Monday, October 24, 2022 at O.S.F. St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 A.M. Saturday at St. Michael the Archangel Church. Msgr. Philip Halfacre will officiate.
Visitation will be from 4-7 P.M. Friday at the Solon-Telford Funeral Home, Streator.
Burial will be in St. Anthony Cemetery, Streator. Pallbearers will be his son, Kenny Schmitz; sons in law, Noah Horaney and Larry Finney; nephews, Josh, Brent, David and Dylan Austin; and Aaron Scudder.
Born February 26, 1964 in Peru he was the son of John and Joyce (Brown) Schmitz. He married Julie Austin on May 21, 1988 at St. Anthony Church, Streator.
He is survived by his wife, Julie Schmitz of Streator; daughters, Lindsay (Noah) Horaney of Streator and Shelby (Larry) Finney of Streator; a son, Kenneth Schmitz of Bloomington; a granddaughter, Kallie Finney and a granddaughter on the way; his mother, Joyce Schmitz of LaSalle; a sister, Karla Schmitz of LaSalle; mother in law, Betty Austin of Streator; brothers and sisters in law, John and Babs Austin, Ron and Sandy Austin and Robin Austin all of Streator; and Jill Austin of Metamora; many nieces and nephew also survive.
He was preceded in death by his father, John Schmitz; father in law, Kenneth Austin and a brother in law, Donald Austin.
Born and raised in Streator he attended St. Anthony Grade School and graduated from Streator High School in the class of 1982.
He worked for many years for Frito Lay as a Route Salesman. He retired in February of 2022.
Kurt was active through the years coaching his children’s different sporting teams. He was also very involved with St. Anthony School while they attended, coaching and serving as Athletic Director for several years. He was a fun loving person who could always put a smile on your face. He will be dearly missed by his loving family and friends.
He was a member of the former St. Anthony Church and currently belonged to St. Michael the Archangel Parish.
