Born on January 15, 1944, in Terre Haute, Indiana, she was the daughter of John W. Losh and Gertrude (Weust) Losh. Her family moved to Streator in 1949; a community she would call home for the rest of her life.
Madonna attended St. Stephen’s Grade School, Streator Township High School (Class of 1962), and Hi-Fashion Beauty School (1962–1963). On August 29, 1964, she married Jerome A. Chalkey at St. Stephen’s Parish. They shared a loving marriage and devoted family life until his passing on April 27, 1986.
A woman of talent, dedication, and quiet strength, Madonna worked as a self-employed hairdresser in her home for 38 years, touching the lives of countless clients who soon became friends. Never one to stop learning or serving others, she attended Illinois Valley Community College in 1990 and became a Licensed Practical Nurse. She worked proudly at St. Mary’s Hospital from 1992 until her retirement in 2010, caring for patients with compassion, gentleness, and grace.
Madonna was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jerome; and her siblings Betty Romoser, Richard Losh, James Losh and Joann Durham.
She is survived by her five children, who were the pride and joy of her life; Theresa (Dan) Muntz, Christopher (Noemi) Chalkey, Todd (Sharon) Chalkey, Jason (Amanda) Chalkey and Sean (Claudia) Chalkey. She also leaves behind her beloved grandchildren; Nathan (Jenny) Muntz, Drew (Sari) Muntz, Owen (Kaylee) Muntz, Jake Chalkey, Rachel Chalkey, Avallyn Chalkey, Drayke Chalkey and Bruxton Chalkey; a great granddaughter, Emmalynn Muntz; nieces and nephews also survive.
In addition to her family, Madonna is survived by her loyal dog and constant companion, Bubba, who brought her daily comfort, joy, and companionship.
Madonna had a gift for creating beauty and comfort. She loved sewing, crafting, and cooking, and her home was always filled with warmth, creativity, and the delicious smells of something she made with love. But above all, Madonna cherished her family. Being a mother and grandmother was her greatest joy, and she poured her heart into every moment she shared with them.
Her legacy is one of love, resilience, and unwavering devotion. Her family finds peace in knowing she is reunited with her loved ones who went before her and that the memories she created will continue to guide their lives for years to come.
Memorials can be directed to St. Michael’s School or the Streatorland Community Food Pantry.
