Matthew Cannella Obituary

Matthew C. Cannella, 90, of Streator passed away Monday, March 20, 2017 at Heritage Health Therapy and Senior Care, Streator.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 9:30 A.M. Saturday at St. Michael the Archangel Church, Streator. Msgr. Philip Halfacre will officiate.

Visitation will be from 4-7 P.M. Friday at the Solon-Telford Funeral Home, Streator.

Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Streator. Pallbearers will be his grandchildren, Tommy and Tim Canale; great grandson, Chris Canale; a cousin, Paul Forino; a nephew, Frank Rhynes; and Jeff Malnar. Full military rites will be accorded by members of the Leslie G. Woods American Legion Post 217 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1492.

Born June 19, 1926 in Streator he was the son of Frank and Josephine (Forino) Cannella. He married Rosemary A. Biroschik on April 1, 1948 at Immaculate Coneption Church, Streator. She preceded him in death on February 13, 1990.

He is survived by a daughter, Cheryl Canale of Las Vegas; a son, Joseph (Penny) Cannella of Springfield; grandchildren, Tommy Canale Jr. of Las Vegas, Tim (Amy) Canale of Las Vegas and Jennifer Malnar of Las Vegas; great grandchildren, Kayla and Marissa Malnar, Chris and Katelyn Canale.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a son, Tom Cannella; a brother, Paul Cannella; a sister, Mary Rhynes; and a son in law, Thomas Canale.

Born and raised in Streator he attended Streator schools and lived in Streator his lifetime.

He served in the United States Army during WW II.

He worked for Don’s Furniture and retired from Teleweld Corporation. He also was a carpet layer for 25 years.

He was a member of the former Immaculate Conception Church and currently belonged to St. Michael the Archangel Church, Streator. He was a life member the Leslie G. Woods American Legion Post 217 and the AMVETS Post 312.

Matt was an active volunteer through the years serving as an Altar Server and Usher for his church. He was a founding member of the Resurrection Choir for over 26 years. He also was a Eucharistic Minister at St. Mary’s Hospital for several years. He served on the St. Mary’s Cemetery Board and also volunteered with the American Red Cross. One of the highlights of Matt’s later years was taking the Honor Flight with his son on September 26, 2016.

Matt had a special warmth and kindness that endeared him to everyone he met. He was a loving father and grandfather and was especially proud of the fact that he was able to have such a close relationship with his great grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by his loving family.
