Matthew L. Mascal, 84, of Streator passed away Monday, February 3, 2025 at his residence in Streator.
Funeral services will be at 12:00 P.M. Saturday, February 8th at the Solon-Telford Funeral Home, Streator.
Visitation will be from 10:00 A.M. until 12:00 P.M. Saturday, February 8th at the Solon-Telford Funeral Home, Streator.
Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Streator. His grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Full military honors will be accorded by members of the Leslie G. Woods American Legion Post 217 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1492.
Born August 30, 1940 in Streator he was the son of Donald and Mary (Yurich) Mascal. He married Beth C. Mallonee on September 14, 1963 at Immaculate Conception Church, Streator.
He is survived by his wife, Beth Mascal of Streator; daughters, Christine (Kim Henry) Mascal of Portland, Oregon and Cathleen (John) Horton of Bloomington; a daughter in law, Amy Jo (Kevin) Lotshaw of Streator; grandchildren, Matthew, Emily, Daniel and Mark Horton; Noah, Grant, Owen, Abby and Malea Mascal.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sons, James Donald Mascal and Matthew Brian Mascal; sisters, Mary Hardy and Patricia Nelson; and a brother, James Mascal.
Born and raised in Streator he attended St. Mary’s Grade School and graduated from Streator High School in the class of 1958. He was also a graduate of the much heralded “School of Hard Knocks” as he would like to say.
Following High School he served in the United States Navy. He was stationed on the USS Bradford.
In the earlier years he worked for Clark Gas Station and also Skelgas. He later worked for Commonwealth Edison as a lineman working his way up to Troubleshooter. He was a member of the IBEW Union.
He was a member of the former Immaculate Conception Church and currently belonged to St. Michael the Archangel Church. He was also a member the Msgr. George A. Dzuryo Knights of Columbus Council # 790 and the Streator V.F.W.
Matt was an avid sports fan. He loved the Chicago Cubs and Bears. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing and bowling. As a youngster he also fought in the Golden Gloves.
He was also very active with and instrumental in starting Streator Girls Softball. He was a longtime volunteer coach and helped build the softball park facilities- even installing the first set of lights on the main field.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the charity of the donor’s choice.
