Raymond Mitchell Obituary

Raymond “Ray” Mitchell, 79, of Streator passed away Sunday, September 3, 2017 at Heritage Health Therapy and Senior Care, Streator.

Funeral services will be at 11:30 A.M. Thursday at the Solon-Telford Funeral Home, Streator. Msgr. Philip Halfacre will officiate.

Visitation will be from 9-11:30 A.M. Thursday at the Solon-Telford Funeral Home, Streator.

Burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Streator. Full military rites will be accorded by members of the Leslie G. Woods American Legion Post 217 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1492. Pallbearers will be, Robert Boales, Anthony Rexroad, Warren Wilson, Garrett Tyler, Gavin Howard, Alan Ross, Rick Tutoky and Hank Tutoky.

Born May 25, 1938 in Streator he was the son of John and Ella Mae (Gidding) Mitchell. He married Jean Ross on February 14, 1969. She survives in Streator. He later married Claudette Ross on May 30, 1985 in Streator.

He is survived by his wife, Claudette Mitchell of Streator; daughters, Suzanne (Anthony) Rexroad of Streator and Morgan (Warren) Wilson of Streator; a son, Robert (Melinda) Boales of Louisiana; step-daughters, Vicky (Bob Wilkey) Sims of Streator and Kim (Richard) Tutoky of Streator; a step-son, Alan (Barbara) Ross of Carey; 17 grandchildren; 1 great grandchild; a sister, Phyllis Bryant of Streator; nieces and nephews. The family was very fortunate to have many great caretakers that helped with Ray through his illness, especially Jana Rice.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Liz Telford; and two sons in infancy, Glen and Jerry.

Born and raised in Streator he attended Streator schools and graduated from Streator High School Class of 1956.

He served two years in the United States Army. He worked for many years for Anchor Glass Company and retired from SMF in Minonk in 2003.

He was a member through the years of the Streator Eagles Club and Moose Club. He was an active member with the Streator Ramp Builders and made many close friendships with the men of the group.

He was an avid life-long Chicago Cub fan and was very happy to enjoy the World Series Champions in 2016. He enjoyed fishing, boating, painting and woodworking. He and his wife Claudette traveled extensively and got to visit many different areas in their travels. They also loved “cruising” and met many great friends during that time.
