Richard Handzo Obituary

  Richard J. Handzo, 95, of Streator passed away Monday, March 4, 2024 at O.S.F. St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Ottawa.

  Cremation rites will be accorded.  Private family burial will take place at a later date.   Solon-Telford Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

  Born March 21, 1928 in Streator, he was the son of John and Margaret (Dominic) Handzo.  He married Marcella Lesak on March 5, 1957 at Immaculate Conception Church, Streator.

  He is survived by a daughter, Cynthia (Robert) Owen of Ellsworth; sons, Anthony (Connie) Handzo of Roseville and Gregory Handzo of Streator; grandchildren, Richard (Lindsey) Handzo, Aaron (Maggie Semington) Handzo, Angela (Nathan) Trimble and Michael (Natasha) Handzo; 8 great grandchildren; sisters, Marcy Munks of Streator, Lorraine Hall of Streator; a brother, Edward (Fran Goerne) Handzo of Streator; many nieces and nephews also survive.

  He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marcella Handzo; and a sister, Mary Lou Handzo.

  Born and raised in Streator, he attended St. Anthony’s Grade School and Streator High School.

  Richard served in the United States Army for three years and later in the United States Marines during the Korean War. He worked at Thatcher’s Glass for many years before his retirement.

  He was a member of the Streator Moose Lodge and the former Immaculate Conception Church.

  Richard was a handyman that liked to fix things.  He enjoyed canoeing, puzzles, and trains. He was a very good dancer and enjoyed dancing with his wife Marcella. 

  Memorials may be directed to the charity of the donor’s choice.
