Richard L. “Dick” Rankin, 84, of Streator passed away Wednesday, April 10, 2019 at his residence in Streator.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M. Monday at Solon-Telford Funeral Home, Streator. Rev. Joe Sanders will officiate.
Visitation will be from 2-4 P.M. Sunday at the Solon-Telford Funeral Home, Streator. Additional visitation will be from 10:00 A.M. until the time of services on Monday at the Solon-Telford Funeral Home, Streator.
Burial will be in Antioch Christian Cemetery in rural Toluca. Pallbearers will be grandsons, Adam Rankin, Tyler Rankin, John Leverton and Justin Gawlik; nephews, Brett and Todd Rankin: and friends, Dave Sweeden and John Bedeker.
Born April 19, 1934 in Streator, he was the son of Robert and Mildred (Litchfield) Rankin. He married Jean McClure on August 6, 1955 in Toluca. She survives in Streator.
He is also survived by daughters, Susan (Randy) Sauer of Texas and Janice (Gary) Leverton of Pontiac; sons, James (Lisa) Rankin of Las Vegas, Nevada and Jerry (Amy) Rankin of Washington; grandchildren, Tom (Alicia) Sauer, Amanda Zeier, Ashley (Justin) Gawlik, Tyler Rankin, Adam (Heather) Rankin, Taylor Rankin; and John Leverton; great grandchildren, Peyton, Olivia, Emma, Morgan, Roman and Madilyn; brothers, Robert (Phyllis) Rankin Jr. of Toluca and Roger (Bonnie) Rankin of Somonauk; and a cousin, Sharon Rubis of Ankeny, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a son, Thomas Rankin.
He attended Toluca Grade Schools and Toluca High School. He also attended University of Illinois for a short time.
He worked for Owens Illinois Glass Company in the forming Department from 1953 until 1992.
He was a member of Central Church of Christ. He was a former member of the Streator Moose Lodge. At the age of 13 Dick started to donate blood and to date had donated 89 gallons helping countless people with his donations. He also volunteered at the Streatorland Food Pantry for many years.
He was an avid golfer, fisherman and hunter and could be found most summer days tooling around Anderson Fields Golf Course on his golf cart with his wife Jean. “Chef” Rankin was in charge of the grill for many Anderson Field Golf Play days as well. He was also a member of the Sandy Ford Sportsmen’s Club.
Dick was an accomplished vocalist and would sing for benefit concerts that raise money for various charities including the Streatorland Food Pantry.
Memorials may be directed to the Streatorland Food Pantry or Central Church of Christ.
