Robert East Obituary

Robert L. “Bob” East, 78, of Streator passed away Tuesday, March 9, 2021 at his residence in Streator.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 12:30 P.M. Saturday at the St. Michael the Archangel Church, Streator. Msgr. Philip Halfacre will officiate.

Visitation will be from 10:00 A.M. until 12:00 P.M. Saturday at the Solon-Telford Funeral Home, Streator.

Burial will be in St. Stephen’s Cemetery, Streator. Pallbearers will be Lee Richards, Randy Biros, Gary Gray, Pete Honiotes, Craig Voigts and Mark Voigts. Honorary pallbearers will be Barry Koppen, Michael Hays, Curt Gretencord, Dave Gretencord, George Christoff, Robert Churney and Jeff Mullins. Full military rites will be accorded by members of the Leslie G. Woods American Legion Post 217 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1492.

Born September 12, 1942 in Streator, he was the son of Lawrence and Priscilla (Heinbuecher) East. He married Alberta R. Gretencord on February 1, 1964 at St. Francis Church in Ottawa.

He is survived by his wife, Alberta East of Streator; brothers in law, Curt Gretencord of Grand Ridge and Dave (Kate) Gretencord of Grand Ridge; nephews, Craig (Terri Taylor) Voigts of Joliet and Mark Voigts of Joliet; nieces, Leslie Flanigan of Joliet, Sharla (Rob) Chadwick of Virginia and Sara (Jeff) Mullins of Arlington Heights; several great nieces and nephews also survive.

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Sharon Voigts and Carol East; and beloved dog, Miley.

Born and raised in Streator, he graduated from Woodland Grade School and Woodland High School.

He served in the United States Army during the Viet Nam War. He served as a military police officer in Anchorage, Alaska.

He worked for many years for Streator Unlimited as a truck driver and later worked for Carolina Logistics. After his retirement Bob worked for Bill Walsh Automotive for several years.

He was a member of the former St. Stephen’s Church and currently belonged to St. Michael the Archangel Church. He was a member of the Msgr. George A. Dzuryo Knights of Columbus Council #790 and the 4th Degree Streator Assembly 2109 of the Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus Honor Guard. He was a member of the Leslie G. Woods American Legion Post 217.

Bob loved going to auctions, collecting and working on clocks, gardening and boating. He enjoyed tinkering around the house, working on his vehicles and just spending time with his wife, Alberta. He was a man of quick wit and always had a smile on his face. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

Memorials may be directed the Grand Ridge Volunteer Fire Department, St. Michael the Archangel Church or the charity of the donor’s choice.
