Rosemary Jonen Obituary

  Rosemary “Rosie” Jonen, 93, of Streator passed away Friday, August 19, 2022 at O.S.F. Richard L. Owens Hospice Home in Peoria.

  Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 A.M. Friday at St. Michael the Archangel Church, Streator.  Msgr. Brian Brownsey will officiate.  Music for the Mass will be provided by family friends, Carolyn, David and Brian Blasco; and Ellen Vogel.

  Visitation will be from 4-7 P.M. Thursday at the Solon-Telford Funeral Home, Streator.  The rosary will be recited at 6:45 P.M.

  Burial will be in St. Stephen’s Cemetery, Streator.  Pallbearers will be her children, Jerry, John, Jeff, Jim and Joe Jonen; and a nephew Dan Retoff.  Honorary pallbearers will be Ben Kissel and David Blasco.

  Born May 28, 1929 in Streator she was the daughter of John “Happy” and Mary (Hrizo) Retoff.  She married her high school sweetheart Barney Jonen on May 30, 1953 at St. Stephen’s Church in Streator.  He preceded her in death on February 9, 1998.

  She is survived by sons, Jerry (Laura) Jonen of Bloomington, John Jonen of Denver, Jeff (Andrew) Jonen of Chicago, Jim (Julie) Jonen of Channahon and Joe Jonen of Peoria; grandchildren, Lauren (Jayme) Roberts and Ashley Jonen; step grandchildren, Matthew Walk and Scott Walk; many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews also survive.

  She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband on February 9, 1998; two grandchildren, Austin and Jackie Jonen on August 9, 1994

  Born and raised in Streator she attended St. Stephen’s Grade School and graduated from Streator High School in the class of 1948.

  She worked through the years for the Piggly Wiggly Grocery Store, GTE Phone Company, Kerr’s Jewelry Store and Fitzgerald Jewelry.  She later worked for Balloons & Blooms.

  She was a member of the former St. Stephen’s Church and currently belonged to St. Michael the Archangel Church. 

  She was active through the years with St. Stephen's Parent's Club, Women Elk's Bowling League, Cub Scouts, Engle Lane, Streator Country Club, decorating her home & for club events.   Probably what she is best known for is her hospitality. Her go-to book was The Slovak-American Cook Book. No one in her presence ever went hungry.  She was known & loved by many and will be dearly missed.

  Thank you to all her recent caregivers including but not limited to Heritage Health of  Streator, OSF of Peoria & Ottawa, LightWays Hospice of Joliet, and especially Brenda Kinkin of Streator; we could not have done it without you!

  Memorials may be directed to the Streator United Way.
